Electra Love: The 10,000 Mile Townie
I have well over 10,000 miles on my Townie. I ride it daily because biking REALLY is my main method of transportation as opposed to my Honda car and Toyota truck. As Phoenix continues to grow, it is packing more people in and developing new methods of transportation to substitute driving. Recently, space for parking is becoming too expensive, just like New York City for example. My son lives in Manhattan, but his car lives in Connecticut.
A friend at work asked me how much I save every year from biking. My answer was very quick… a lot. Even better, there is no hassle about parking. And best of all, my work supplies bike lockers to employees as they are behind the alternative transportation movement knowing there is limited parking.
I am lucky because I work near where I live, so I can bike. I have saddlebags and after work I ride for physical and mental health. I shop for groceries, hardware, etc. then return home. My rides are usually around 20 miles although occasionally I’ll ride out west to the stadium and back home (28 miles). There is no need for a gym membership.
I will say though that I am a hard ass as I ride during the summer here and for those same distances. I have learned over time to listen for those signs of dehydration and de-salination (loss of salt) as I ride. In the summer, I mix tea for myself and add salt to compensate for the loss during work and rides.
Take care out there.
